Aspiring paramedic killed in crash

SAN ANTONIO, TX – KENS5 reports that an aspiring medic was killed in a head-on collision Monday morning, one day before he was scheduled to take his final exam.

According to his mother, Asante Contreras, 20, was less than two miles from his home when his vehicle was struck on the I-35 flyover at I-410 by Joseph Woolard, a fugitive wanted for a March 2019 incident in which he allegedly fired shots at police. Woolard was driving the wrong way when he crashed into Contreras.

“I know that if [Woolard] hadn’t been out on bond, my son would’ve graduated and he’d be wearing his uniform right now,” Anja Contreras told reporters. “Instead, he’s going to be buried in it.”

Contreras’s body will be escorted by coworkers and fellow first responders to his hometown of Del Rio, and the cost of his funeral has been covered by thousands of dollars raised in donations.
